Architectural Pottery

Founded in 1950, Architectural Pottery's uniquely identifiable streamlined pottery quickly became a leading vision amidst the rapid overtake of modernism in Los Angeles. In 1949, La Gardo Tackett asked his art students to design ceramic vessels with a modern take on architecture and with a purpose of filling a void in the home accessories market. The prototypes were later put on exhibit and caught the eye of Rita and Max Lawrence who decided to start a business and sell the vases.

By redistributing these mid century modern pieces, architects and designers began to embrace this new spirit of living immersed within the climate. It also sparked the popularity surge of pottery in 1955 which is accredited to the infamous white cylindrical planter used to accessorize almost every Beverley home for its time.

Although production was forced to shut down in 1958 due to an unfortunate fire, A.P.'s initial push that domino-affected the architectural terra cotta revolution remains to be recognized within numerous museums and collectors' archives.
