Living in the age of convenience

taiwanese grass jelly herb (3.1/5) (cooling, bitter mint sensation that feels light but has an intense climate. apparently, when steeped with agar agar or gelatin, it can thicken into a jelly. however, i would prefer to drink the herb as is.) "And surely you have seen, in the darkness of the most innermost rooms of these huge buildings, to which sunlight never penetrates, how the gold lead of a sliding door or screen will pick up a distant glimmer from the garden, then suddenly send forth an ethereal glow, a faint golden light cast into the enveloping darkness. How in such a dark place, gold draws so much light to itself is a mystery to me. Modern man, in his well-lit house, knows nothing of the beauty of gold, but those who lived in the dark houses of the past were not merely captivated by its beauty, they also knew its practical value, for gold in these dim rooms, must have served the function of a reflector. Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty." Tanizaki'...

Would they listen?

The beach will always remain a prominent scene of my childhood as the countless hours I spent there will be forever cherished. However, after a full day of building, swimming, and burning, I never truly felt satisfied until the sun’s arch began its descent into the sea. It was only then I was able to wade out as far as I could without drowning and scream my grandmother’s name at the top of my lungs. The true bliss I felt in the momentary belief that she could hear me across the ocean from her three-hundred-square-foot
apartment in Seoul, South Korea was the kind of joy that only the childish desires of youth can bring. Throughout my countless years of primary public school education, history class was always the one that fascinated me. How we came to know of cultures’ seemingly infinite existences was a concept I could never truly wrap my head around. How do all of these drastically different lifestyles understand each other’s heritage so harmoniously? Perhaps it’s the root discernment of all humans, or maybe the fundamental empathetic nature we are born with. Anthropology is a field I’ve always wanted to delve deeper into and a career in the field of social science would help awaken my future voice and discoveries to the open
my personal ocean call to the world.
